What are these four Blue Jays up to?
I saw these four vivid Blue Jays from the kitchen window. It’s tough to get photos of jays, as they are typically very active and don’t sit still long enough for portraits. It’s a bit blurry, but I love the backdrop of the hemlocks.
I watched for a few minutes to see what happened. This group of four turned out to be two pairs, a fact made clear by the feeding-bonding behavior that ensued first between the left-most pair, then the right-most pair. These are all adults; it’s way too soon for fledglings, so, at least in our region, if you see feeding behavior at this time of year, it’s almost certainly courtship. Like this.
